Time for Local Government to Show Leadership

Release Date: 22/10/2015
The Sydney Business Chamber has described the IPART report, Fit for the Future, as the opportunity for local mayors and councillors to step beyond self-interest and show leadership to resolve the issues highlighted in the report.
The Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Patricia Forsythe said, “Local councillors, by their election to office, are deemed to be local leaders and nothing can be more important than ensuring that each local council has the capability to manage the needs of local communities into the future.
“Forced amalgamations are not ideal but with the evidence as stark as 71 percent of Sydney councils deemed incapable of managing their services and infrastructure in a sustainable manner, Sydney councillors must look to amalgamation.
“The word ‘leadership’ springs to mind with some councils accepting the findings and acting on them rather than forcing the hand of the NSW Government.
“Across the Greater Sydney Region change and growth is evident with not only major infrastructure projects but major private sector developments, and local councils cannot be immune from the need to change.
“Strong efficient local councils are vital to the efficiency of business in local areas.
“To be a competitive global city Sydney needs good governance at every level.
“The Sydney Business Chamber urges local councils to seize the opportunity of the 30 days the NSW Government has given them to respond to the report, and take a positive approach with neighbouring councils,” said Mrs Forsythe.
