Sydney the place to be

Release Date: 15/03/2017
The Sydney Business Chamber says the latest tourism data shows how important international tourism, including business travel, is to the Sydney and NSW economy.

“It is not surprising that Sydney has once again come out on top as the number one destination in Australia for international visitors given its strong brand overseas and its reputation as a safe, clean and vibrant city,” said Patricia Forsythe, Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber.

Tourism Research Australia released its report today, which revealed NSW attracted more than 50 per cent of all international visitors to Australia last year.

The report also found that overseas visitors contributed $9.5 billion to NSW’s economy with Sydney in front of all Australian capital cities with the highest volume of visitors.

"The marketing of Sydney into Asia is clearly paying dividends with strong growth from this market.

“There is no doubt that when Sydney is doing well NSW regions reap the benefit with international visitors staying longer and travelling wider than in past years.

“It is clear that the major event strategy is paying off with events such as Vivid and major sporting events attracting strong international visitation.

“Despite the positive numbers it is important we do not give up on those issues limiting Sydney's capacity including the regulations that tie Sydney Airport in red tape and the inability to solve the lack of adequate cruise ship berths east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge", Mrs Forsythe said.
