Sydney’s Drawcard - Major Events

Release Date: 16/09/2015
The Sydney Business Chamber has labelled today’s National Visitor Survey (NVS) figures, on the strength of NSW domestic tourism, as evidence major events are adding to the appeal of Sydney as a domestic visitor destination.

Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Patricia Forsythe said, “Major events are a significant attractor for visitors to Sydney, and with that comes increased visitor spending on accommodation, food and transport.

“The investment in major events such as musicals, art exhibitions and sporting events is proving a winner with domestic tourists and a boon for local businesses.

“The numbers are proof that NSW Visitor Economy Industry Action Plan, with its focus on developing a regular series of major events is working.

“This year, Vivid Sydney experienced a record 19 per cent increase, on 2014’s attendance figures, in visitors from Australia and overseas.

“Visitor number momentum looks set to continue with major events such as the NRL Grand Final, the Australian Golf Open and the Annual Summer Series of Art including an exhibition from the National Gallery of Scotland, still ahead in 2015.

“The NSW Government policy of doubling visitor spending by 2020, has the strong support of business and is one of the reasons for the confidence being shown by investors in Sydney’s infrastructure to support the leisure and business travel markets.

“Whilst the Australian dollar may be a reason Australians are staying home, the strong focus on major events for Sydney and NSW is giving domestic travellers a reason to choose Sydney ahead of other destinations,” said Mrs Forsythe.
