Shoppers to get an early Christmas Bonus

Release Date: 11/12/2014
Changes in operating conditions for retailers in the countdown to Christmas are a positive step, according to the Sydney Business Chamber.
The NSW Government has announced the removal of the requirement on retailers in business zones to lodge an application to vary the conditions of their planning consent to allow unrestricted trading hours for the next fortnight.
Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Patricia Forsythe said, “Extended trading hours give shoppers the freedom to shop when it is convenient for them and retailers get the freedom to choose when to open without having to make an application to their local council.
“The policy is great for retailers who have to compete with online stores that face no restrictions based on time, and removes red tape.
“Retailing is the largest employer of workers under 45, and the single most important entry point for school leavers into the workforce. Extended trading hours will generate job opportunities for retailers to meet the needs of their customers.
“The NSW Government’s decision to apply common sense to the highly regulated planning system in relation to the needs of retailers in the crucial two week shopping period sets an important precedent by creating some flexibility in the often highly inflexible planning system.
Mrs Forsythe said, “The other benefit of the unrestricted hours will be that Sydney will be able to act like a global city where shops trade well into the night, particularly close to Christmas.
“Sydney is a tourist hub and one of the key attractions, particularly for Asian tourists is Sydney’s retail offering. Tourists will love the freedom of the changes in the regulation.
“By the single stroke of the pen, the Minister has shown the NSW Government recognises the value of retailing and the importance of this two week period to the broader economy.
“These changes reinforce NSW as the number one place in Australia to do business.
“For Sydney to be a truly international city we need to have global standards and that means trading around the clock during busy periods,” said Mrs Forsythe.
