Parramatta Night-time Economy to Thrive

Release Date: 30/05/2016
The Sydney Business Chamber believes the launch of the pilot program Easy to Do Business by Service NSW and the Office of the NSW Small Business Commissioner will make it simpler for businesses in Western Sydney to start up, grow and thrive.

David Borger, Western Sydney Director of the Sydney Business Chamber said, “Initiatives like this pilot program which cut red tape are welcomed by business, but also by the community who will see the benefit with the potential for new bars and restaurants in their neighbourhood.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Western Sydney with approximately 120,000 SMEs contributing 18% to the NSW Gross National Product.

“Parramatta has a significant growth trajectory with almost 20,000 new residents moving to the area in the next 5 years.

“With these additional residents, Parramatta’s night time economy will continue to thrive. In 2009 to 2011, Parramatta’s night economy grew by 6.2%, and it appears to have grown considerably since then.

“Small to medium businesses are attracted to Parramatta’s reasonable rents, as well as the growing and diverse customer base.

“20 years ago, Church Street Parramatta was a ghost-town, shops were boarded up and people felt unsafe walking through.

“Now it’s a completely different story, the streets are alive with people enjoying food and wine, and business is taking advantage of a new younger demographic who enjoy being out and about at night.

“Anything the government can do to support these businesses is welcome. Easy to Do Business is a good start to strengthening Parramatta’s night time economy,” said Mr Borger.
