Moorebank Intermodal important to Sydney

Release Date: 6/04/2017
The Sydney Business Chamber says the turning of the first sod today at the Moorebank Intermodal Terminal marks a major milestone for one of the most important projects to the future of Sydney as a competitive destination in the logistics chain and to support the container transport needs of Sydney.
“More than $11 billion in economic benefits will be achieved in the next 30 years through improved productivity, reduced business costs and reduced growth in congestion once the Moorebank Intermodal is constructed,” said Patricia Forsythe, Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber.
“Moorebank Intermodal will enable more freight to make part of its journey by rail and will reduce the distance containers travel by trucks between Port Botany and south-west Sydney.
“The NSW Ports 30 Year Master Plan identifies intermodal terminals, such as Moorebank, as essential for cost-effective, efficient and sustainable container distribution throughout Sydney,” Mrs Forsythe said.
Sydney Business Chamber, Western Sydney Director David Borger said he was pleased progress was being made on the construction of Moorebank Intermodal as the development would boost local job opportunities for south-west Sydney and had been identified as a priority project by Infrastructure Australia.
“The freight handling precinct will create more than 1,300 jobs during the construction of Moorebank Logistics Park and more than 6,800 jobs once the site is fully operational.
“It is clear that increased efficiencies Moorebank Intermodal will bring to the freight supply chain will benefit both the people and businesses of Sydney and the state,” he said.
