Metro to Reshape Central Barangaroo

Release Date: 26/11/2015
The Sydney Business Chamber has described the announcement that the tender process for the development of Central Barangaroo has gone back to the market as an indication of the development significance of the recently announced Metro project through the Sydney CBD.

“The new tender process is an exciting opportunity for the future of Barangaroo and an indication of the importance of aligning transport infrastructure with development strategy,” said Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Patricia Forsythe.

“Barangaroo is not only a vital development for the future of Sydney as a global city but its prestige is now such that the tender process will attract interest from world-renown architects and development companies.

“The value of the site is such that the overall floor space ratio will be up to 25 per cent greater than was planned before the Metro project was announced yet the intention to maintain greater than 50 per cent of the area as public open space will not be compromised.

“Central Barangaroo forms the heart of Barangaroo between the iconic headland and the dominant commercial precinct in the South and presents an opportunity to deliver spectacular buildings that represent a mix of commercial, retail, residential and cultural uses to support the million users who will come through the precinct annually as a result of the proposed Barangaroo Metro station.

“The choice of Central Barangaroo for the station has created opportunities that were not envisaged when Barangaroo was first on the drawing board and require a fresh approach to the design of the precinct

“The importance of Central Barangaroo has been elevated as a consequence of the Metro station decision and it is responsible to go back to the market for ideas that reflect the enhanced visitation that will flow from the construction of the Metro,” said Mrs Forsythe.
