Investment in Sydney Airport Pays Off

Release Date: 9/04/2015
The Sydney Business Chamber, which advocates for Sydney as a competitive global city, said the latest ACCC airport monitoring report 2013-14 has acknowledged the major improvements Sydney Airport has made, during its continuous improvement program of its airport facilities including terminals and the airfield.

Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Patricia Forsythe said, “The results recognise the extensive capital upgrade program underway, which has seen over $2.6 billion spent since 2002, with a further $1.2 billion of investment planned for the next 5 years.

“Specifically, the recent T1 road network upgrade has improved airport access, easing traffic flow in the immediate and surrounding airport precinct.”

Mrs Forsythe said, “Recognition of Sydney Airport’s improved performance is good for our city and good for the State, as the airport is a major generator of economic activity.

“Sydney Airport is a significant contributor to the Australian economy, the direct and indirect economic contribution of the Airport at $27.6 billion, equates to a 2% contribution to the Australian economy and 6% to the NSW economy1.

“The Airport is also a significant employer of the city’s population, currently 8% of the NSW population (283,700 jobs) and is set to grow to over 400,000 jobs by 2033.”

“Sydney’s status as Australia’s only global city is enhanced by the functionality of our major international travel hub, Sydney Airport. Continued improvements to the airport site will enhance our global appeal and is something the Chamber welcomes,” said Mrs Forsythe.
