Headland Park renewal nearing completion

Release Date: 23/10/2014
The Sydney Business Chamber has congratulated the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust on its stewardship of Headland Park which is nearing completion with the approval today by the Federal Government of the re-use of the final set of existing military buildings.
Since its establishment in 2001 to manage former Defence sites on behalf of the public, the SHFT has overseen the handing back to the community of more than 40 ha of land at Georges Heights that was previously off-limits for over 180 years.
The Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber Patricia Forsythe said, “The Headland Park represents one of the jewels in Sydney’s harbourside crown with its adaptive reuse of former military buildings and the extensive open-space which has encouraged strong community use.
“The decision to convert the last buildings on the site into a modest aged care facility, adjoining the existing commercial and community facilities, ensures that the all ages of the community will gain a lasting benefit from the former Defence facilities.
“Acknowledging the military heritage of the site, this new facility will be home to at least 11% of residents who are former defence servicemen and women.
“The new facility will be within the existing building envelope of the former 10 Terminal headquarters occupying just 1% of the site and will give life to a group of buildings that has been left derelict at the eastern-end of the Park for decades.
Mrs Forsythe said, “The community should be pleased that the proposed development will fit within the existing buildings footprint and has been judged to have no adverse traffic impacts whilst adding a much-needed facility for the care of the aged, including a small day support unit for dementia patients.
“The final phase of the proposal will also result in the opening up of a further 6ha of landscaped public space opening up corridors of land and walkways previously off limits to the public.
“The Headland Park Trust should be congratulated on its policy of encouraging maximum open-space on the site, whilst at the same time finding building solutions to ensure the future of the Parkland is sustainable.”
