Free WIFI a must for Sydney

Release Date: 20/06/2016
The Sydney Business Chamber says free Wi-Fi in the Sydney CBD is a must have for Sydney if it is to offer a premium visitor experience, encourage innovation and enhance liveability.
“Global cities around the world offer free Wi-Fi in their CBDs, on public transport and at various tourist attractions,” said Patricia Forsythe, Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber.
“Sydney’s lack of free public Wi-Fi means it is lagging behind other worldwide cities and even within Australia, which affects our standing as a truly global city.
“International tourists increasingly want to arrive in a city and immediately use their devices to go online without worrying about global data fees, which is not possible in most parts of the Sydney CBD.
“Free Wi-Fi would also promote Sydney as one of the top business event locations and an innovation hub by enabling greater connectivity for those seeking to collaborate and conduct business outside of traditional work spaces.
“Local residents would also benefit by having free and equitable access to maps, public transport information and social media, across all of the CBD.
“Whether we build new infrastructure or look for options to leverage off existing infrastructure, Sydney needs to prioritise such an investment if we are to have a connected and modern city.
“Given today is World Wi-Fi Day, it’s time for both the local and State Governments to commit to a plan for free Wi-Fi in the Sydney CBD, to bring Sydney on par with other cities in Australia and the rest of the world,” Mrs Forsythe said.
