Exciting Future for Sydney Fish Market

Release Date: 26/06/2017
The Sydney Business Chamber says the appointment of an architect to design the new Sydney Fish Market as a world-class food and dining destination is welcome news that this long-anticipated project for Sydney is finally underway.
“Sydney’s great harbour deserves a great fish market and despite the Sydney Fish Market being one of Sydney’s tourism centrepieces, it is well overdue for renewal,” said Patricia Forsythe, Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber.
“The Chamber has for a long time advocated for the rejuvenation of the Sydney Fish Market and it is exciting to see one of Europe’s leading architectural firms – 3XN Architects, chosen to design one of Sydney’s cherished visitor hot spots, which is a further example of the interest Sydney projects attract across the world.
“More than three million people visit the Sydney Fish Market a year and recent Tourism Research Australia data indicates that one in every three Chinese visitors to Australia come to the market even though its amenity falls well short of the standards of a world-class attraction.
“Once complete, the new $250 million Sydney Fish Market will be the jewel in the Bays precinct crown.
“Deloitte Access Economics estimates the market’s redevelopment will deliver an additional $54 million in consumer benefits and boost the NSW economy by a further $52 million through tourism.
“This project will be more than just a facelift, it will be a major renewal and represents another key project remaking the Western Harbour Precinct from Walsh Bay to Blackwattle Bay,” Mrs Forsythe said.
