Commonwealth Games bid supported

Release Date: 28/04/2017
The Sydney Business Chamber, Western Sydney says a Commonwealth Games bid for Western Sydney would be a great initiative to bring the whole region together.

David Borger, Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Western Sydney, said, “The Chamber will get behind the NSW Government should it wish to bid for the 2026 or 2030 Commonwealth Games.

“Western Sydney would be the perfect place to host the Commonwealth Games building on the legacy of its success with the 2000 Olympic Games.

“We have the capacity to recycle sporting infrastructure from the Sydney Olympic Games and use the expertise that comes with the region’s management of major events each year.

“The visitor economy is growing in Western Sydney with the region experiencing a hotel boom that could be used to underpin the bid.

“There are at least five hotels and other visitor accommodation under construction or being planned for Parramatta, including the city’s first five-star hotel and Luddenham will soon have a 275-room hotel located in the Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

“If successful, the Games would be another reason for significant infrastructure projects such as the Western Sydney Airport, the Metro West and Parramatta Light Rail to be given high priority.

“We can utilise the infrastructure and great assets we already have in place in Western Sydney and I urge the NSW Government to seriously consider making the case for the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Borger said.
