Commission Deserves Community and Parliament Backing

Release Date: 8/09/2015
The Sydney Business Chamber has described the proposed Greater Sydney Commission (GSC) as a bold initiative to ensure the challenges of managing Sydney’s growth are achieved through a strong but equal focus on the economy, the environment and the social needs of the community.

Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Patricia Forsythe said, “The proposed appointment of three commissioners with responsibility for one of the economy, the environment and social planning sends a clear message that the Sydney of the future is one where broad community interests are given equal consideration.

“The proposed Greater Sydney Commission gives Sydney the best chance to overcome the tyranny of small decisions and the problem of government agencies making decisions from within their own silos.

“The division of the Greater Sydney Region into six districts each with a representative chosen by each LGA within the district will ensure that all parts of Sydney have equal representation whilst preventing any one council from being dominant within a district.

“The proposed six district representatives will create the opportunity for a strong district leader but the challenge will be to get each LGA representative within a district to agree on its nominee.

“The division of Greater Sydney into six districts should be taken as a first step to the consolidation of Sydney’s local councils which should remain a key item on the government’s reform agenda.”

“The inclusion of the secretaries of Treasury, Transport and Planning and Environment on the 13 person commission is an important step to aligning land use with transport planning within a framework that sets the funding priorities for delivering key infrastructure projects.

“The future requires a strong and robust planning system that facilitates growth and ensures that the failures of the past to align housing, jobs and infrastructure are addressed through a new structure that brings together as one body not only the key agencies of government but representatives drawn from across Sydney with an agenda to manage growth to create a competitive, liveable and sustainable city,” said Mrs Forsythe.
