Business supports pragmatic approach to planning reform

Release Date: 6/05/2016
The Sydney Business Chamber says the New South Wales Government’s commitment to improve the state’s planning system with a more pragmatic, targeted approach to reform will improve business confidence and encourage sustainable development.

“The business community is pleased to see planning reform back on the agenda for the NSW Government as an efficient planning system is one of the most critical enablers for investment, jobs growth and affordable housing,” said Patricia Forsythe, Executive Director of the Sydney Business Chamber.

“We strongly support the Government’s positive, pragmatic approach to planning reform as there is considerable opportunity to improve the efficiency of the current system without undertaking a complete overhaul of the state’s planning act.

“Simplifying the planning system is long overdue and will help position Sydney as a leading global city, and promote integrated planning that links growth and development with infrastructure to meet the needs of growing communities.

“As Minister Stokes has acknowledged, the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act as drafted in 1979 was inherently sound until overlayed with multiple amendments and changes outside the legislation through regulation that have made the current law unwieldy and exceptionally complicated.

“Community and business consultation is essential for timely decision making and successful development outcomes. Having a transparent planning process whereby parties involved are accountable improves business confidence and encourages investment.
“We look forward to engaging with the Government during the consultation phase and when the exposure draft is released later this year,” Mrs Forsythe said.
