Authority Needed to Create an Airport City

Release Date: 22/06/2017
The Sydney Business Chamber, Western Sydney has thrown its support behind a push to establish an authority to oversee the development of an airport city around the new Western Sydney Airport.

David Borger, Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, Western Sydney, said, “It is more important than ever that an independent, well-resourced Western Sydney Airport Authority is created now that we have a confirmed operator and timeline for the development of the Badgerys Creek airport.

“The Chamber has long called for such an authority that would cut through the three tiers of government to ensure a coordinated approach to delivering an aerotropolis at Badgerys Creek.

“The authority would address the overlapping governance and planning controls surrounding the airport site, and the challenge of coordinating a number of government agencies and utilities, to deliver a single vision for a Western Sydney Airport precinct.

“Without an authority, we will not get the cooperation needed to design and implement a new airport city.

“No authority equals a piecemeal approach to land development and infrastructure delivery around the airport, which would diminish the potential economic and social benefits for the region.

“The authority should also work with the private sector to ensure planning controls allow for innovative approaches to land development around the airport site.

“We are calling for the establishment of the authority to happen now so we can get on with this critical project for Western Sydney,” Mr Borger said.
