Another important step for Western Sydney Airport

Release Date: 25/06/2015
The Sydney Business Chamber says the passage of the Airport Amendments Bill 2015 will provide much-needed certainty for business, as planning gets underway for the construction of the Western Sydney Airport.
The Western Sydney Director of the Sydney Business Chamber, David Borger said, “This Bill means planning for the Airport should now be simplified as many of the approval processes have been combined.
“Business has been eager for a plan and updated timelines, and this is a good start in preparing for the airport which will transform the region.
“We look forward to working with the Federal Government on planning and eagerly await the soon to be released EIS.
However, Mr Borger restated the Sydney Business Chamber’s calls to establish an independent authority to oversee and manage the airport’s planning and delivery.
“An independent authority will promote integrated land use planning for the airport and surrounding land, while also providing an important contact point for business and community consultation.
“At our Western Sydney Airport conference in May, attended by more than 400 guests including Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss, international keynote speaker, academic and co-author of the book Aerotropolis, Dr John Kasarda, echoed this need for synthesis.
“Dr Kasarda outlined the need for stakeholder alignment and coordinated public-private sector actions, to create an Aerotropolis that could have an economic impact of up to $15.6 billion by 2050.
“The Chamber wants to work with Government to maximise every opportunity for our members and help create the jobs hub the region has been promised,” Mr Borger said.
