Chamber welcomes NBN Service Guarantee initiative

Release Date: 25/06/2018
The state’s peak business organisations, the NSW Business Chamber and the Hunter Business Chamber, say they welcome and fully support the proposal by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten to introduce an NBN service guarantee.

“This policy mirrors what we proposed back in March and used in our submission to a Federal government Parliamentary Enquiry, right down to the observations about the financial impact that the delays and disruptions are having on business,” said NSW Business Chamber Chief Executive Officer Stephen Cartwright.

“It’s good to see sound policy being proposed by the alternative Government, and the proposed protections for small business are exactly what our members have been calling for.

Hunter Business Chamber Chief Executive Officer Bob Hawes said “This is an issue that resonates with business right across that state and the concept of a service standard or guarantee is truly justified.”

“A survey conducted last year which focused on the NBN asked more than 850 businesses for their experiences, and found that 39% of businesses reported having to wait more than four weeks to have their NBN service up and running. Reliability was also a key concern for businesses post connection, with 42% of businesses saying their NBN service was unreliable,” he added.

“Furthermore, our quarterly business surveys show small businesses consistently rank broadband and digital connection including the NBN as a drag on the efficient running of a business, particularly in regional towns, where they are too often let down by unreliable services, and unbelievable delays in having faults fixed,” Mr Hawes said.

“We hope the commitment from the opposition is matched by all parties moving into the next Federal election to give clarity and certainty around an issue that has long been a confusing and at times costly exercise for small business,” Mr Hawes said.
